WiFi capabilities

Howdy,

What are the capabilities of the WiFi module in PiKVM 4+? Bands supported: 2.4GHz? 5GHz? 6Ghz? And what about the 802.11 alphabet soup?

Hey Badsanta,

The WiFi part of PiKVM V4 series is managed by CM4’s wireless module.

The official RPF’s datasheet (section 2.1) for CM4 says it’s Cypress CYW43455, that is:

  • 2.4 GHz, 5.0 GHz IEEE 802.11 b/g/n/ac
  • Bluetooth 5.0, BLE

JFYI, CM4 has its own PCB antenna (not recommended due to metal case, but it works), and also supports external antenna. If you go with the second option, do not forget to update the config files for CM4 to know which one to use.

Yep, the solid metal case provides a pretty good shield for RF :winking_face_with_tongue:. If I go with the external antenna, I’m reading here :

To install the antenna, fix it in the round hole in the back side of the PiKVM

Uhm, I don’t see any round holes on any side of my device.

By-the-by, the video on antenna installation is broken:

We’ll check and fix the video, thank you for heads up.

On the V4 Plus datasheet take a look at the connectivity diagram, page 2. You want to use #17 - this is a special hole for the antenna. It’s covered by a plastic cap by default. There are two holes actually (if you want to use both WiFi and an optional LTE module, i.e. two antennas at once).
