Power budget

Howdy earthlings,

The docs for V4+ say that it can be powered from the USB-C, but one has to “avoid creating a significant power load on USB” peripherals. How significant of a load are we talking about? Can anyone provide a number?

Hi!

Short answer: All USB ports together must be less 500mA (2.5W). Keyboard, mouse is ok.

Explanation:

IDLE power consumption of bare PiKVM is around 3.5W. But PEAK, or better say, maximum designed power is 12W (10W CM4 + additional things). And in case if you will use some cellular connection card and/or USB A devices - you may get designed 24W. This value we use as reference in our datasheets and labels on the V4 Plus.

USB ports of PiKVM V4 Plus is designed to provide regular 5V 500mA, around 3W at the limit.

PiKVM V4 Plus USB Type-C Power input must be 5V 3A, with this specification one USB port is limited to use for “full” power. No problem to add keyboard and mouse over USB HUB, it will take less 500mA in total.

Thanks!

Wow, never thought a cell modem would consume 12W…

Not specially 12W, but designed is 5W for mPCIe exactly, and all additional USB, external and internal - gives this value of total 24W.
